Bye Bye GPLHost

Tagged in

Earlier this month I asked in my 12 months GPLHost review,

I am again considering whether to leave GPLHost or stay. …. My growing site needs more data transfer allowance. I am close to using up 30GB that came with the plan, and it appears the only way to get more data transfer is by upgrading to the next plan, as there is no overage charge.

So you can pretty much guessed from the title of this post. 2 days ago I logged into DTC (GPLHost’s control panel), and filed a cancellation request. There has been up’s and down’s over the last 13 months when I hosted with GPLHost, but generally it was all good. Anyhow. I ordered another VPS from someone else and moved my site over.

Bye bye GPLHost. At least in my book they are of good records so maybe there will be a chance to host with them again. Unlike another provider whom I also sent a cancellation request to this week. More about these guys later.

GPLHost Sydney VPS 12 Months Review

It has been a year since I wrote my 3 weeks review on GPLHost, and I am still with them despite some uptime issues back in June. My site hosted on GPLHost’s VPS has grown in popularity over the last year and the performance has been fine over the last 3-4 months. Now the VPS renewal date is coming up in 2 weeks (I usually renew every quarter). I used to pay my bills on time — but this time, I need to think about whether I should continue with their service.

Well. Read my review first.

GPLHost 13+ Hours Outage in 2 Days

There are some very good Xen hosts. SliceHost being one that I have had experience with — it has rock solid stability, very good uptime, great performance and all the flexibility of Xen at an incredibly price. Too bad they are not in Australia. I don’t know how bad a Xen VPS host can be, but I certainly have some bad experience with GPLHost, whom I have reviewed their Sydney-based VPS 6 months ago. They were “tolerable” for the first few months, but got worse over the last couple of weeks.

How OpenDNS Saved My Day

Just read the latest post on OpenDNS blog, How OpenDNS saved Caio’s job — Caio from Brazil used OpenDNS when his ISP’s DNS server was down, and was able to complete his job.

Similar event happened to me today. No, it did not save my job — it was not work related. Let’s just say that OpenDNS has saved my day.

GPLHost Sydney VPS 3 Weeks Review

GPLHost Logo This post is a continuation from my previous post, searching for an affordable VPS on the East coast Australia. At the end I was choosing between two offerings — GPLHost’s Xen package 4 in Sydney, or DarkStarX’s VDS package in Perth. Although DarkStarX is cheaper, but (1) it’s on OpenVZ with only 128Mb guaranteed (2) it’s on the west coast so 60ms ping, at the end I picked GPLHost.

3 weeks later, I am writing this review.

GPLHost now provides Xen VPS hosting in Sydney, Australia

Got a comment from Damien of GPLHost on my XenFu blog that they have started to provide Xen based VPS hosting in Sydney Australia. The data centre utilises MCI network, which has a nice 15-20ms return trip time from both my home ADSL connection and work.
