Year 2007 has come and — it is almost gone. It has been an interesting year here at HostingFu, my blog on web hosting. This blog was created back in 2006 when I was looking around for web hosting providers to host some of my hobby projects. 100+ posts here later, playing around with hosting accounts actually became the hobby itself! My main obsession has been virtual dedicated/private server hosting, which you can probably guess from all the VPS hosting related articles I have written. Well, I love the power of root, but (1) can’t afford the whole “real thing” (2) don’t have a big enough project to warrant the “real thing”. I guess I will be testing out more VPS hosting in 2008 then.

Earlier this month I asked in my 12 months GPLHost review,

I am again considering whether to leave GPLHost or stay. …. My growing site needs more data transfer allowance. I am close to using up 30GB that came with the plan, and it appears the only way to get more data transfer is by upgrading to the next plan, as there is no overage charge.

So you can pretty much guessed from the title of this post. 2 days ago I logged into DTC (GPLHost’s control panel), and filed a cancellation request. There has been up’s and down’s over the last 13 months when I hosted with GPLHost, but generally it was all good. Anyhow. I ordered another VPS from someone else and moved my site over.

Bye bye GPLHost. At least in my book they are of good records so maybe there will be a chance to host with them again. Unlike another provider whom I also sent a cancellation request to this week. More about these guys later.

The latest change to DreamHost promo code is about to make what I have written a year and half ago irrelevant.

Effective next Tuesday, December 11th, $97 will no longer be the maximum discount a DreamHost promo code can give… it will be dropped to $50. Keep in mind, $97 is still the total value of a referral… so if somebody signs up with your $50 promo code you.ll still get $47 ($97-$50) credited to your account.

It has been a year since I wrote my 3 weeks review on GPLHost, and I am still with them despite some uptime issues back in June. My site hosted on GPLHost’s VPS has grown in popularity over the last year and the performance has been fine over the last 3-4 months. Now the VPS renewal date is coming up in 2 weeks (I usually renew every quarter). I used to pay my bills on time — but this time, I need to think about whether I should continue with their service.
