unless ofcourse you have a huge cluster with fault tolerance and fail over options but I don’t see that being the case for an average Joe.

Which is exactly why Google is doing it! With their size it is actually better building their own servers.

However most companies/service providers are not Google, nor should they try to do the “Google way”…
