Early on we used to be much more hands-on with our server hardware and actually did put them together for a short while. Ultimately we decided it just wasn’t worth the time. The hidden time suck is in ordering the parts and keeping track of the inventory. If you’re buying parts even 10 at a time it starts to become a part-time job just managing it all. Specialization is good!
It makes a lot of sense to really think about how much your own time is worth. Unless you’re interested in doing something to learn how to do it or for the pure joy you get from it, there’s a good chance it’s not worth the time and someone else can do it almost as good and a lot cheaper!
