You may be curious to see our KVM VPS page at http://perfohost.com/kvm.vps.html where we compare KVM VPS vs OpenVZ/Virtuozzo vs Xen side by side. KVM is a most advanced Open Source virtualization solution on the market and after testing it for awhile, we prefer it over Xen and OpenVZ.

Swap inside vps under OpenVZ

OpenVZ does not support Swap. If you have a program that requires swap, then you can create and use a fake swap.

Instructions:

1) Log into your vps as root.

2) Create the next fake-swap.sh shell-script.

#!/bin/bash

SWAP="${1:-512}"

NEW="$[SWAP*1024]"; TEMP="${NEW//?/ }"; OLD="${TEMP:1}0"

umount /proc/meminfo 2> /dev/null
sed "/^Swap\(Total\|Free\):/s,$OLD,$NEW," /proc/meminfo > /etc/fake_meminfo
mount --bind /etc/fake_meminfo /proc/meminfo

free -m

3) Make script executeable

chmod u+x fake-swap.sh

4) Run script to create fake swap ...

... with 512MB (default)

./fake-swap.sh

... with 1024MB

./fake-swap.sh 1024

Thank you very much for this incredibly helpful article. So many people had recommended OpenVZ that I almost bought it. I needed 110MB of the 128MB RAM provided by the VPS and I couldn't get a straight answer out of anyone.

Many thanks.

I would like to see a discussion about RAM FS on each virtualization technology. I remember trying to setup a filesystem in RAM on an OpenVZ machine last year and I could not do it. I know that you can do it on Xen, because I'm doing it right now on two Xen VPS instances. There's something very strange about the way OpenVZ handles your memory.

thanks for posting this, i'm building a server and have been contending with the various VM systems for inclusion. this just proves the point i've been feeling in my gut that Xen is the better choice for the task, even if it's swappyness needs tuning, but what doesn't.

thanks again.
