Thanks, do-release-upgrade was what i was looking for. upgrading from 7.04 straight to 8.04 looks like worked just fine.

Some quirks probably will show up, but at least the big things are working well.

“do-release-upgrade” does additional stuff that “dist-upgrade” does not.

You don't need all that fluff to upgrade, simply update /etc/apt/sources.list replace gutsy or whatever with hardy.

apt-get update; apt-get -u dist-upgrade

Achieves the same outcome, and you can get away with about 32 or 48M of ram.

From there its always good to run 'debfoster -n -t -v -i' and toss out the unwanted nonsense that they insist on shoving down our throats but have no place being on a server.
