Site Offline for Two Hours

Tagged in

Downtime sucks, but it sort of reminded you how good it has been. HostingFu, along with about a dozen other sites hosted on this SliceHost VPS, were down between 8pm and 10pm AEST last night, when traffic is about the busiest from Australia. No good. Maybe that is one reason for hosting locally in Australia so the datacentre won’t schedule network maintenance at inconvenient time. Then I feel sorry for the now gang-of-four at SliceHost as the network dropped out at 4AM in the morning, CST time!

Here is the network graph generated by Cacti.

SliceHost network issue

Whole event was handled professionally though, as usual.

When I first detected my sites were down was around 8:20pm AEST. Can’t connect to SliceHost’s home page. Traceroute shows anything beyond Datotel is down. Went to WebhostingTalk and found this thread. Went and check this off-site status page shows they have already notified NOC. Went to their live chat, there were already 10-15 people there and PickledOnion has already been answering enquiries. Can’t do anything when it was outside their control so I went and did something else. Then their Twitter feed came in saying the network is up, and yes indeed.

Total downtime: a bit more than 2 hours.

While network has been flaky recently, but A+ to SliceHost on communication.

It sounds unplanned, but If it was a planned outage, didn’t they notify you ahead of time?

From SliceHost’s blog, it was a planned but non-impacting maintenance by the data centre so they did not notify the customers ahead of time. Then you know the story — non-impacting ended up down for 2 hours due to a Cisco IOS bug.

Really sorry for the outage Scotty, unacceptable.
