Hey Scotty,

Please forgive my very simple questions here, am very very new!

What tools/services (free) can I use to measure both VPS hosting and shared host performance?

without doing any actual coding/editing of html on my pages...

Futhermore, what actual key perfomance variables should I be looking at/looking out for?

Cheers

Don

We run RAID-10 (after a double disk failure with RAID-5 one time). I can count the number of times we've had 2 "DEGRADED" disks in a RAID-10 array on 1 hand... but for those 5 times I'm extremely grateful for it :)

Yes Dreamhost is a great inexpensive dumping ground for rsync and other backups.

Mike -- I agree that if a host who stated the backup is provided, they should have done it properly. In fact if I am running a VPS hosting company, I won't even advertise a backup service as I am too scared that I will flop it, stuff up all my customers' files and are responsible for them.

At the same time, I am only trying to stress the fact that customers should never rely only the backup services the host provides. More redundancy the better.

By the way, just saw Joyent's BingoDisk has 10Gb storage/unlimited bandwidth for $19/year. No, I am not an affiliate :) Oh, you also have a DreamHost account -- that pretty much solves all the off-line backup problems :)

Thanks for explaining this Scotty. The situation you encountered boggles my mind. We'll be sticking w/ RAID1 or RAID10 for the foreseeable future.

VPSLink really botched the job on this one. Their lack of communication and attention to support tickets over this multi-day multi-issue fiasco was astounding. When they did manage to get the VPS back online it was with 9 day old restores. When they finally acknowledged that the resorts were old, a bunch of us had already spent our Sundays rebuilding our VPSes. When they did finally respond to my tickets they said their own backs were from "about 30 hours prior to the drive failure". This really makes me question their backup plans.

You are correct, the customer is responsible for making backups. However an hosting provider's system should be set up in a fashion that if a failure occurs which is not the customer's fault the backups should be recent not 30+ hours old.

I'm leaving them for good once I get my Slice setup.
