We've been using Linode for Development & Staging for around 4 months now & the server is lightning fast. Response times even from Melbourne, Australia are fantastic (I'd hate to think how quick it was in the US).

Our major concern is scaling, since that's a hurdle we've not crossed yet I'm hoping that Linode can help in this respect. I'm guessing we'll probably purchase another Linode for the main database then use a CDN like Amazon Cloudfront for static content initially. But scaling beyond that....

Anyone Linode users had experience with high end rails applications & how Linode can handle growth?

Sure. This is para-virtualization rather than the full hardware virtualization. They use their own kernel for dom-U. Not a big deal…

This is mostly Sales Pitch. They do not offer anything other than THEIR KERNELS, no Cent OS kernels.

I agree totally. I also have been a customer for quite some time now and i've be really impressed. Especially when it comes to the free upgrades and the amazing support on #linode - which I access through their website.

drive space but only use 5GB for one machine running Debian. The rest of the space can be used with OS images for RedHat or something else and you can freely choose to boot any of these as long as you only have one going at a time.

The choice of datacentres is certainly appealing for me being in Germany. The other thing is that, from my reading, Linode have been known to upgrade their plans at no cost to their customers. Which is a great thing and seems rare these days.

Of course SH haven't been around long enough to know if they are going to do that. Will have to wait and see I suppose.

For me, both SliceHost and Linode has been great. Currently Linode does have its price advantage as they have just upgraded their plans, and they also have multiple DC you can choose from (being an Australian I really prefer a West Coast DC).

However, I have been with SliceHost for over 15 months now and there is one thing I can testify -- their service and support is second to none, and their community is very developer friendly. Short period of time I have with Linode has not yet allowed me to test their support responses.
