Just a quick comment - it's weird, as rsync has always been supported, even for their normal accounts. I've been using DH's normal folder for backups since forever with rsync.

I'm now moving to the proper backup server and I'm glad rsync is "officially" supported anyway. I'm syncing now and it's going great.

Done! Thanks for notifying me about this. Seeing the credit is only 1, even DreamHost reckons this is an easy task...

There is an active suggestion at the Dreamhost Control Panel to allow rsync. Go an vote for it if you're already on Dreamhost.

Thanks for the info!

Yup I know that they use Solaris for filers but I was just worrying whether they are using the same grade of hardware for their main filters as well as they backup volumes. If it's all based on the same architecture but just having the snapshot turn off, then I guess my question is answered...

Dreamhost has been my host for about 4 years now. I won't recommend them for shared hosting because their servers are slow (mostly the mysql servers) and they tend to have network problems from time to time. But I can enlighten you to how their systems work.

They use sun filers (not sure which one) for their normal web clusters. These run ZFS and are raidZ'd and do weekly scrubs for data integrity. As a customer I can tell you that a lot of people have requested rsync support for the backup accounts (which would be done easiest by adding shell support) and dreamhost has responded that it would not be that hard to do. Currently if you try to ssh in it only hangings waiting for an sftp connection.

For normal accounts you have a hidden .snapshots directory (in every directory) that has two hourly snapshots, two daily snapshots and a weekly one. It looks to me like they just disabled the snapshots of the backup accounts.
