unless ofcourse you have a huge cluster with fault tolerance and fail over options but I don’t see that being the case for an average Joe.

Which is exactly why Google is doing it! With their size it is actually better building their own servers.

However most companies/service providers are not Google, nor should they try to do the "Google way"...

Personally I like my prebuild boxes by dell and apple, they just work and I have next business day warrenty. I don't see that happen with a self made box. Usually you have to send back the parts to the shop you ordered so they can start RMA. For servers especially warrenties are super important, unless ofcourse you have a huge cluster with fault tolerance and fail over options but I don't see that being the case for an average Joe.

Thanks for commenting Dallas!

It makes a lot of sense to really think about how much your own time is worth.

Exactly. Especially in the context of the article it is the time of a skilled programmer. Or in your case the time of a company founder. I do miss the time when I can sit down and put the boxes together, but it was an utterly waste of time when I look back. Or sometimes you pay contractors in to do coding work, not optimising his hardware and trouble shooting drivers compatibility!!

Early on we used to be much more hands-on with our server hardware and actually did put them together for a short while. Ultimately we decided it just wasn't worth the time. The hidden time suck is in ordering the parts and keeping track of the inventory. If you're buying parts even 10 at a time it starts to become a part-time job just managing it all. Specialization is good!

It makes a lot of sense to really think about how much your own time is worth. Unless you're interested in doing something to learn how to do it or for the pure joy you get from it, there's a good chance it's not worth the time and someone else can do it almost as good and a lot cheaper!
