We have quite a few Gentoo boxes installed since 2003, and the software have always stayed in the latest cutting edge, never with a need for a fresh install. Only issues we had was when we upgrade some major software (GCC upgrades, Apache config changes, MySQL 4.0 to 4.1 for example) there are some special instructions that need to be done manually.

I remembered when I was back in using RedHat, Debian and Mandrake, I used to have to do clean re-install every 18-24 months so the software can stay current. Such a pain.

Hey man,

I definitely agree with you there. I've been using linux for awhile and I couldn't find a distro that had any control but was there for you when you didn't have a lot of time to work out the kinks. I remember RH's RPM hell and I switched to slackware..then more hell when I wanted to stay current(back when I loved gnome). I recently grabbed a dual Xeon intellistation off eBay and figured I'd want to compile everything from source for my performance loving self. Then I found Gentoo..and..emerge..and I'm sold..for life..no problems, EVER.
